Motorway Eating

I find one of the best solutions is to go to service areas with a Marks and Spencer Simply Food. There is one on the M40 and I think there are about six in total now. I have a letter from Stuart Rose, who says this is a big area for them to expand into. Last time I went out of Manchester on the train, I got some very good snacks from the Simply Food in Piccadilly Station. They have a very nice egg salad, plenty of fruit etc.

There is also a couple of O’Neills at Clackett Lane. I’m told the latter does gluten-free soup. Or most of their other branches do.

Migraines

I have noticed that I no longer seem to get any migraines.

Not that I got many, but I did get slight headaches, blurred vision and flashing lights in front of my eyes. Often these were brought on by pin point lights in the ceiling.

I reported this on the UK-Coeliac Yahoo Group and have had several people report a similar reduction in migraines after going gluten free.

Baking Powder

Baking powder should be GF as it’s sodium bicarbonate. It has a chemical formula of NaHCO3.

I used to work for Mond Division of ICI and they had two Solvay processes that produced tons of the stuff. One was built about 1880 out of oak beams instead of steel girders. If you were over five foot six you kept bumping your head, as people were smaller then.

However, someone might stick some additive in it. I suspect you can buy pure sodium bicarbonate in a pharmacy with a BP label on it.

I just phoned my local Boots in Newmarket.

They stock 500 grams or half a kilo of pure sodium bicarbonate, which costs £1.89. That should be enough to last you a lifetime if you keep it dry!

Gluten Free Wedding Cakes

There’s someone called Inspiration Cakes run by Sheila Pope near Southampton. They have done my granddaughter’s birthday cakes and they are spectacular and I’m told they’re very tasty. They were non-gluten free.

My son told me that she does do gluten-free cakes so I phoned her and asked if she could do a wedding cake. She can!
